The Science Behind CAR T Cell Therapy:

CAR T cell therapy involves the modification of a patient’s T cells, a type of white blood cell responsible for orchestrating the immune response against pathogens and abnormal cells. T cells are collected from the patient’s blood and genetically engineered to express chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) on their surface. These CARs enable T cells to recognize specific proteins, or antigens, present on the surface of cancer cells.

The Treatment Process:

The CAR T cell therapy process typically involves several steps:

T Cell Collection: T cells are harvested from the patient’s blood through a process called leukapheresis.
Genetic Engineering: The collected T cells are genetically modified in the laboratory to express CARs specific to the target antigen present on cancer cells.
Expansion and Activation: The engineered CAR T cells are cultured and expanded to generate a sufficient quantity for infusion back into the patient.
Infusion: The expanded CAR T cells are infused back into the patient’s bloodstream, where they can recognize and target cancer cells expressing the target antigen.
Response Monitoring: Patients are closely monitored for signs of response, potential side effects, and disease progression following CAR T cell infusion.
