Introduction:
Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), also known as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), is a life-saving procedure used to treat various blood disorders, immune deficiencies, and certain types of cancer. By replacing diseased or damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells, BMT offers hope for patients facing conditions that affect the production of blood cells. Understanding the procedure, types, and considerations surrounding BMT is crucial for patients and their caregivers.
The Procedure:
During a Bone Marrow Transplant, patients receive high doses of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of both to destroy diseased or abnormal cells in the bone marrow. Once the existing bone marrow has been depleted, healthy stem cells are infused into the patient’s bloodstream through a vein. These stem cells travel to the bone marrow, where they begin to produce new blood cells, restoring normal function.
Types of Bone Marrow Transplant:
There are three main types of Bone Marrow Transplant:
- Autologous Transplantation: In this type of transplant, patients receive their own stem cells, which are collected and stored prior to undergoing high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Autologous transplantation is commonly used to treat certain types of cancer, such as lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
- Allogeneic Transplantation: In allogeneic transplantation, patients receive stem cells from a compatible donor, such as a sibling, unrelated donor, or umbilical cord blood. Allogeneic transplantation is often used to treat conditions such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and genetic disorders.
- Syngeneic Transplantation: Syngeneic transplantation involves the transfer of stem cells from an identical twin. This type of transplant is rare but offers the advantage of minimal risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication in which the donor’s immune cells attack the recipient’s tissues.
